So which brands are most successful at the Masters?
DRIVER: We start with a tie at the top of the bag as three brands have claimed four wins each. Though recent history suggests TaylorMade are making a run to try top this category.
1ST: NIKE/PING/TITLEIST (4 WINS)
2nd: Callaway/TaylorMade (3 wins)
3rd: Mizuno/PXG (1 win)
FAIRWAY WOODS: Titleist edge ahead this time helped by ZJ putting a Titleist 913Fd fairway in play in 2007. It was one of only two non-PXG clubs in his bag.
1ST: TITLEIST (5 WINS)
2nd: Nike (4 wins)
3rd: Callaway/Ping/TaylorMade (3 wins)
IRONS: I have to say I was surprised by how many winners have been using Titleist irons. But then again it is easy to forget Tiger and Phil – best associated with other brands – had them in play for their first victories.
1ST: TITLEIST (6 WINS)
2nd: Callaway (4 wins)
3rd: Nike/Ping (3 wins)
WEDGES: The most eclectic club in the bag across winners as we saw eight different brands secure victory in this category. There was, however, one clear leader.
1ST: TITLEIST (6 WINS)
2nd: Callaway/Nike/Ping (3 wins)
3rd: Artisan/Cleveland/Ping/TaylorMade (1 win)
PUTTER: The biggest margin of victory of any club in the bag. Will we see another winner with a Scotty this year? Looking at you, JT…
1ST: SCOTTY CAMERON (9 WINS)
2nd: Odyssey (4 wins)
3rd: Ping (3 wins)
BALLS: Certainly no surprises here – and it was a pretty even split between Pro V1 and Pro V1x, too. Maybe Bridgestone could claim 2nd place here. (If you know, you know…)
1ST: TITLEIST (10 WINS)
2nd: Nike (5 wins)
3rd: Callaway (3 wins)
Elsewhere, four winners in the last 20 years have had hybrids in the bag – with one win each for Callaway, Nike, PXG and Titleist. And though Augusta’s layout doesn’t generally lend itself to driving irons, they have also been in the bag for four wins, including two for Titleist and one each for Callaway and Ping.
So there you have it. I hope you enjoyed geeking out on some vintage Masters WITB rundowns as much as I did.
Conclusion? If I was a betting man – or, indeed, woman – I’d be lumping on a Titleist staffer…
